Honoring the Legacy of Joan Shrewsbury
Today, we take a moment to honor the incredible legacy of Joan Shrewsbury, who served on The Guilford Foundation Board of Directors for many years (1982 – 1997), including a term as Vice President from 1984 – 1988.
Joan joined TGF during its formative years, helping to shape its structure, mission, and initiatives. A few key initiatives during her tenure included providing seed funding for the Before and After School Care program, Meals on Wheels, GCTV, and the Guilford Food Bank; saving the Grass Island shack (multiple times); and starting domestic violence counseling for women and children. TGF installed a flagpole at the community center and contributed to the brick walkway between Whitfield Street and the town parking lot.
Beyond TGF, Joan was active with the Historic Commission, Red Cross, Guilford PTA, Guilford ABC, Guilford Fund for Education, Women & Family Life Center, and the Guilford Free Library.
She brought not only her expertise but also a passion that inspired everyone around her. As a fierce advocate, she was dedicated to bettering our community and has had a lasting impact.
In 1984, following the tragic death of her close friend’s son, Stephen Looney, a promising young man about to be married, Joan helped establish the Stephen A. Looney Scholarship Fund. It honors his legacy by awarding college-bound students who excelled at soccer at GHS and exemplify his leadership qualities.
The family encourages memorial gifts to go to the TGF Stephen Looney Fund, the Guilford Free Library, Guilford Interfaith Volunteers, or a death with dignity advocacy group.
We thank Joan for her years of service. She will be missed but never forgotten.
