Scholarship Honors Alison Varian’s Legacy of Maritime Stewardship
One of the most meaningful aspects of community foundation work is seeing how charitable funds continue to reflect the passions, values, and causes that mattered most to the people they honor.
The Alison Varian Memorial Scholarship Fund is a wonderful example. Established in 2018, the fund honors the legacy of Alison Varian, an avid boater and fisherman whose life was deeply connected to the waters of Long Island Sound. Through annual scholarships awarded to students at The Sound School in New Haven, the fund supports young people pursuing careers in aquaculture, fisheries, and marine science.
Alison’s commitment to the maritime community extended far beyond recreation. She served as Chair of Guilford’s Shellfish Commission and Harbor Management Commission, Treasurer of the Guilford Marina Commission, a certified U.S. Coast Guard vessel examiner, and Commander of the Power Squadron, a nonprofit organization dedicated to boating safety and education. Through these roles, she helped promote responsible stewardship of local waterways while advancing maritime safety and environmental awareness.
This year, the scholarship was awarded to Jakub Schreiner, a graduating senior at The Sound School. Alison’s husband, Garth Varian, and good friend Stephen Goldschmidt presented the award. His selection reflects the fund’s commitment to supporting students who share Alison’s passion for the marine environment and who aspire to make meaningful contributions in related fields.
The scholarship serves as a lasting tribute to a woman whose leadership, service, and dedication to the maritime community continue to make an impact. Through the opportunities it provides students like Jakub, Allison’s legacy lives on, inspiring the next generation of marine scientists, environmental stewards, and community leaders.
