The Harvey Martin Music Scholarship Fund
Harvey Martin was known in Guilford not just as a musician but as someone who genuinely loved sharing his gifts with others. Whether he was playing trombone at Bill’s Seafood, Quattro’s, the VFW, a PorchFest, or even his own front lawn, Harvey delighted in an audience, especially when it included friends, neighbors, and family.
Music was his language of connection, and he approached it with humility, warmth, and quiet joy. Even after long breaks from performing, he always found his way back, drawn by the friendships and sense of belonging that music brought into his life.
Harvey’s musical journey began early and remained a thread throughout his life. From his years playing in school ensembles and the UConn Marching Band, including a European tour, to later performances with Tuxedo Junction, music was both a passion and a source of renewal. Friends recall his remarkable talent, paired with an instinctive modesty, that never drew attention to himself and always blended seamlessly into the group. As one longtime friend put it, “Everybody doesn’t like somebody, but nobody didn’t like Harvey.”
While Harvey’s love of music ran deep, the only thing he cherished more was his family. He was a constant presence, front row at school concerts, sporting events, graduations, and everyday moments large and small. He kept a handwritten calendar, carefully tracking every upcoming event, and he showed up unfailingly, proud and encouraging. His children and grandchildren knew they were supported in everything they did, and his gentle humor, thoughtful comments, and private smiles made even ordinary moments feel special.
While music was his passion, Harvey’s professional life reflected the same dedication and care. He spent most of his career as a hospital pharmacist, primarily at The Hospital of St. Raphael, where he was respected for both his expertise and leadership. His commitment to his field extended beyond his workplace, including service as President of the Connecticut Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Whether in healthcare or music, Harvey approached his work with integrity, thoughtfulness, and a deep sense of responsibility to others.
The Harvey Martin Music Scholarship Fund was created to honor these qualities and extend them into the future. This designated fund provides an award to a graduating Guilford High School student pursuing higher education who participated in the school’s instrumental music program and is recognized for being kind, considerate, and supportive of others. In celebrating students who lead with both talent and heart, the fund reflects the way Harvey lived, encouraging music, compassion, and community to carry on for generations to come.
